I know that in my house, our kitty loves to perch up high and watch what her minions…I mean owners are doing. We have added some extra shelves, and strategically placed furniture to give her as much access to as many different perches as possible, but I will be the first to admit that Bob Vila would simply chuckle at my DIY skills when it comes to anything but the most basic construction. Here is a website called Modern Cat that has a section of DIY projects that has inspired me to give some DIY projects another shot. After all, while she is usually a benevolent ruler, kitty does demand her tributes.

Lilly is an 8 year old pit bull who lived with her owner outside of Boston, MA. Last week Lilly’s owner Christie Spain was walking with Lilly along a railroad track when Christie fell unconscious on the tracks. A freight train was coming and the engineer knew he could not stop the train in time. He then realized that Lilly was working to pull Christie off the tracks and to safety. The train did hit Lilly as she was just able to get Christie safely off the tracks, but both Lilly and Christine lived through the incident. Lilly lost her leg and has major injuries to her pelvis, but is being released from the hospital this week after undergoing surgeries.

Well, not tattoos in the same sense people have. A new trend amongst younger pet owners is creative grooming. This can include something as simple as a custom hair…um, fur style, a little color, or going full out and styling your pooch to look like a tiger. A new part of this trend is pet tattooing. This might also be called pet airbrushing, really but many are having temporary designs sprayed onto their pets using special, non-toxic, pet friendly dyes. What do you think? Does your dog need “Dogs rule and cats drool” on his or her shoulder?

Nearly all of the prisons in Washington state have some sort of animal program to help inmates adjust their behavior. Starting this year, one minimum security prison has assigned cats for the inmates to care for. In this program, which has virtually no cost to the prison, two shelter cats are assigned to live with a pair of inmates per cell. The inmates have to work with the cats to socialize them and leash train them. In an interview, one inmate said it is like having a child to go home to.
